suckered into it

So my OB called to today to give me a hard time about being a trouble maker at the peri’s office. I explained … to the nurse… that I did not want to take steroids unless it was a real high risk that I was going to deliver this week and I don’t think I will. And the test won’t make me think otherwise. 15% chance of starting labor from a positive result is NOTHING. That is such a small percentage. My cervix is still up high and closed… even though it’s soft, funneling & only 1.6 cm thick or thin I should say. If I keep my butt on the couch I’ll be fine. I said I would take the silly swab test next week at my ob appointment and she said she would check with the doctor. 5 Minutes later she called back and said my OB wants to see me tomorrow, to check my cervix AGAIN and to take the FFN test. This won’t make me change my mind about the steroids right now but it might give everyone (myself included) a little ease to know I won’t be going into labor within the next 2 weeks. Because that’s what it’s going to come back…I won’t be going into labor… I won’t. These babies are not ready and they are not coming out right now. I will sit on the couch and not get up… I will! So tomorrow at 1:10 I’ll go to my Ob’s office and have the test. I guess THAT can’t hurt. But NO steroids! I’m going to keep these babies in for at least 7 more weeks… I will…I will!

I may have been suckered into the test but I’m not going to be suckered into taking steroids unless it’s REALLY time…. And right now is NOT the time. All I need to do is make it 5 more weeks before the steroids don’t do anything anyway… then they can’t pester me about them.

PRAY FOR FIVE MORE WEEKS…. ONLY 5 WEEKS… THAT’S NOTHING… RIGHT!!!

  2. Good luck on your 5 more weeks! I know you'll make whatever decision is best for your babies even if it's not the most pleasant decision for you!

  3. You are too in my prayers Brittany. Keep off your feet all the time. And only get up to use the bathroom. 5 weeks on the couch will go by faster with Ozzie to entertain you.

I don't blame you...I would not want them either.

  5. Praying for 5 more weeks. Really hard!!
But, if I can say it, as a mom of a baby who was born prem and had HUGE lung problems, steroids are brilliant... they would have made the world of difference to him... but in my case it was too late to get them. Just saying...

  11. Oh Brittany, I'm sorry your going through all this. But good for you, stick to what you want. You CAN keep those babies in and I will be praying for you also.

Yeah about both babies being head down, I'll say a prayer that they'll stay that way.

  13. well, the test won't hurt just stick to your guns unless you have a change of heart about what your intuition tells you. You're right...your babies are not going to come yet...they are going to be "obeident" already stay inside for another 5-7 weeks...at least! :-) We'll be praying for that!

It's so funny how when you're on 'bed rest' they want to see you so much it's more stressful than helpful. I was on bedrest for only 2 wks at the end of my pregnancy but I had 2 non-stress tests a week & a peri 1x a week w/ a doppler study u/s & a fluid check u/s during my non-stress tests. i was driving myself going to lunch after...BUT...my issue was not that i'd go into labor it was a bloodflow thing and they felt like takign it easy in bed would help my bloodflow...so it was not nearly as strict as yours.

you keep at it...keep laying on the couch & keep being positive!

  14. Did I miss the post about why you are so opposed to steriods?

  15. I love your blog and I'm praying not only for 5 more weeks...but for 7...and for PINK!!!

Both my sisters had preemies (31 & 32 w). Both had time to get two doses of steroids. For one baby he was off the vent w/in 24 hours. For another he was on for over 6 weeks. All I'm saying is there is time. And maybe it helps and maybe it wont.

Not that it matters because in 7 weeks when you have them, they won't need 'em!!

  16. I think it's great that you're sticking up for yourself regarding your medical care. So many women just roll over and get talked into things they feel uneasy about just because the doctor pressures them, and supposedly the doctor is always right. (Hmph, well we've found that to be untrue several times through dealing with Dillon's cancer diagnosis)

Hang in there! We're praying for you!

  17. Ok Brittany, I have never been pregnant since I am only in college, but I am applauding you now. I have really bad asthma and allergies and have been on steroids before. They hurt your system, so YAY for sticking up for yourself!!!

Listen to your instincts and praying for more weeks that the babies are inside! You go girl!!!

  20. I'm really pulling for you all to make it to when the babies will be born healthy...fingers toes and everything else crossed too...
my dearest friend has been a nicu clinical nurse specialist for 20 years and I'm curious why you are SO opposed to the steroids...
they could make such a postive difference to your babies if they are needed...is it the timing of the steroids...are you thinking it's too soon. Both my nephews were born six weeks early and I know that having steroids has saved them from a lifetime of potential respiratory illnesses. I know virtually nothing about this so I am only asking out of curiosity NOT judging you about your decisions AT ALL...
I have an inkling that all will be fine... smiles and sunshine from Australia!!!!! :):)

  24. Hey Brittany... praying you'll make it as long as possible... as hard as it is - SIT STILL! :) At 37 weeks, we had no stay in the nicu, no problems at all, we were out of the hospital in the average amount of time. The babies were 4lbs13oz and 5lbs1oz. I was almost wishing they would keep us in longer so I could rest :) But we were sent home, and the girls have had no major problems. One had RSV at about 5 months, but we never had to go to the hospital and by some miracle, the other twin never got it. So hang in there - do whatever it takes to keep those babies inside as long as possible. I'll be praying!

  25. Just take this time off because once those babies do come you are going to be doing a lot. Relax as much as you can. I know it's hard but you CAN DO IT! : )

Prayers that the babies stay put!

  26. As a NICU nurse for the past 25yrs, I see how steroids make a such a difference in premature baby's lungs. Babies that get them (through mom) have much better lung development and require much less ventilatory support. I am not saying your babies will be preemies, but you never know. Best for them to get them. It will make a big difference in their lungs and shorten their hospital length of stay!
I think I missed why you do not want them. Good Luck

  27. Hey okay I SO don't want to be a stickler here but, just be careful okay. Maybe you should pray about the steroids?

My friend (who looks similar in size to you) had her twin babies at 26 weeks!! They are alive and healthy NOW (3 years ago) but they were in the NICU for 3 1/2 months.

I don't want to frighten you, I don't want you to have to endure that too.

I will definitely keep you in my prayers.. I want to see those little ones healthy.. so think carefully! Good luck

  31. Hi!
only a lurker on your blog, but today i had to comment....:)

i had to take steroids (with my 2nd one i wouldn´t do it as well) and i had an allergic reaction because of it, so i´m not a huge fan, i must say! i can understand the fears of the dry, the nurses and all that, but i think it´s the parents very own decision and after doing some research there´s always a risk taking them....so i can totally understand you!
i´m on bedrest as well to keep my singleton girl for a bit longer and i´m getting some globules to let the cervix rest and to avoid contractions and it worked wonders, i must say! i don´t know if you´re convinced of homeopathy, but if you want to know what i´m taking i´ll let you know...
    just drop me a line

  32. We don't know each other, I can't remember how I found your blog. I check in to see how you are doing every once in a while, because I have twins too. I'll be praying for your pregnancy to continue at least 5 more weeks. I'll pray for your doctors to have wisdom about how to treat you and for you to have discernment about what to do. Please be good about staying down, don't aggrivate your uterus.
    Blessings, Kathy

  33. I'm all about prayer Brittany, so even though I don't know you in real life I will be praying for you, that the babies stay in and the doctor doesn't continue to pressure you about the medicine. Mother's intuition is powerful!

  36. You seem to have a very strong will and so you will see these babies through this time. I have no doubt. Mind over matter (with a little help from above) right? My question and maybe you have already said and I missed it. Is other than it being a chemical in you body, why not the steroid? Will it not be benefit them at this time? Is it better to wait until they are further along? from possibly having my second early the greatest fear we had was that if he came before 37 weeks that his lungs would be behind developmentally as this is last thing on boys to mature. But he came at 38wks and 5 days (planned) and all was well. Just curios what your stance is other than no is. I have had to take steroids for Ulcerative Colitis (nasty nasty disease) and although it was a miracle drug for me, I H-A-T-E-D (and I dont like to use that word so you know I mean it) taking it every day I had to shove it down my throat. Luckily it did what it was suppose to but left me with 12 unwanted pounds. I hope that all goes today and I pray that you dont get sent to bedrest at the hospital. By the way the twins over at It's a corny life are doing well at 22 weeks and mommy posted a picture...took your cue of a belly picture with me asking daily for one. Grin.

  37. Good for you for staying true to yourself. I think the test will just reassure you and everyone around you that your babies are staying put for a little while longer. After all....Mama knows best ;)

  38. Good for you for sticking to your guns as best you can. I wonder when the dr. people will figure out that a woman, especially one who's had 4 babies, has some idea about her own body and how it feels! So, yeah, sit your butt down on the couch! (I only said that 'cause you did. And since you don't know me I have to write this disclaimer :)) Will pray for 5 weeks but hope for 7. Hang in there! Ok, no hanging....

  39. Brittany,
Prayers for five more weeks! Prayers for lots of rest for you! Please note that you are correct in saying that men are not made to run a house and take care of the kids and everything all day and night as a woman would, but only in the very special way in which they "take" care of things. :) I think that special was the key word there! LOL
Just let it go. It can get done in FIVE WEEKS right?
I can't believe how many blogger readers you have and I am feeling extra special that I really know you. Your a great woman, friend and momma and going to be a wonderful momma to those twins in FIVE WEEKS right?
    Update us soon!
    Blessings and Love!
