the end

the time has come for this trip to end...

with some disappointing news and exciting news we rushed for home

we drove 5,700 miles in 5 weeks

sometimes all day, sometimes for just a few hours and sometimes through the night

we saw familiar faces and new places...

we made beautiful memories
and have forever fallen in love with living, working & dreaming on the road

but for the next few months we are back in North Dakota...

on the farm we call home

out in the middle of nowhere

where our garden grows and you can see the milky way everynight.

although I already miss being on the road...

it's good to be home.

kittens & neighbors

in the rare case that you follow me on twitter...
you may already know we went to visit newborn kittens the other evening
they had just opened their eyes and were absolutely precious
mama had 7 kittens {6 orange tabby and 1 lonely tiger}
the neighbors told us how they knew the father cat was from our farm a mere 4 miles away
we talked of generators and blizzards
they also told us of the buffalo they had just slaughter earlier that day
{the organs were laying just outside the barn}
we talked of spitting lamas and coyotes
and how it must have felt to have 7 kittens in mama's belly
the girls talked about "kitties" with complete awe
we talked about my bare feet and how this just isn't going to cut it in a North Dakota winter

we talked about mama and her payloader home she made for her kittens

and when their little dopey ears would perk up

dad held weary girls until they drifted to sleep
we watched the kittens wrestle until they were sleepy

and mama wanted them back...
so we put them back into the payloader

and drove the 4 miles home
thinking of the next time we'd come by to visit the kittens
and talking about which ones will be ours

you know you live in the country when

...you can hear the mail lady coming from a mile away
...you can see the milky way on a clear night
...walking down the middle of the road at midnight you're only worried about coyotes
...you can watch storms come and go without feeling a drop of water
...your closest neighbors are bison & longhorns
...the pounding of the gravel road lulls your children to sleep
...the closest town only has a post office, church & grain elevator
...your daughters pull your pants down while you're hanging laundry
and you finish hanging the last 2 pieces before you pull them up
...UPS calls to ask which roads are underwater before coming out

...you find a new frog or two everyday
...half of your children play outside naked at least once a day
...your son can talking farming with the best of them
...you arrive in town 1 1/2 hours away and you kids proclaim
"we're here already...that was fast!"

...your son prays that we "don't get blown away" every night
...a rain storm leaves you wondering if you can mud the roads without your husband
...you see a coyote, deer, skunk, pelican, frog, snake, peacock, sheep, lama, wild turkey, jack rabbit, mud duck, crane & countless birds and bugs on one 12 mile drive
...you scrub the dirt off of the tub after every bath
...you consider this a road...

...I know you must have some too!
let's hear them!

dear wasps...

I know most people despise you
but I find you {amazingly} helpful
you pollinate the flowers and the fig trees
and clean up those unwanted garden bugs
but you picked a really bad spot to nest

and you went and stung grandma
so now you're getting sprayed
...by something from grandma's arsenal of poisons
that is unless you get this urgent message
and relocate somewhere other than the gas pump
I understand this is highly unlikely
so thanks for your 13 days of service
and goodbye.

2 girls and a boy

...went for a ride

in the back of the gator

and giggled into the blanket the whole time

it was the little kid version of this
