lots of words sprinkled with lots of photos

my head is swirling with thoughts,
which means I must write....
so here it goes!

we're back out in the camper again...
not that I expect you to keep up with our in's and out's of camper to house.
with the flooded basement the boys needed to move out
and it was the perfect time to work on the bathroom
so we're locked out for a while.

it's quite a chore to feed the cats around here
we feed them a raw diet of various fish, chicken, raw eggs, vegetables & scraps.
it's not pretty to prepare...
but they sure do love it.
Even the kittens come running now.

Ozzie is still the caterpillar hunter around here,
he will spend an hour or more searching through the garden for them.
This is can't-see-em
...he's quite creative with the names I would say. :)

The girls are going to turn FOUR this weekend. gasp.
...and they are already talking about turning five.

they went and got dressed the other day and came outside to tell me,
I must take their picture.
Then they proceeded to tell me how pretty their dresses were
and their headbands and church shoes and pretty nails.
they are girly alright.

Nolia came in from the swingset today and said...
"mama you don't need to teach me to pump on the swings anymore,
I can do it, so now you can teach me to read"

They are usually hot on the tails of anything Ozzie is doing
and he recently made the announcement, at dinner,
that he was ready to read now.

Gavin on the other hand.
He can read.
But he doesn't want to.
so, different from his book worm big brothers.

He would much rather work with his hands.
all.day.long and with a cheerful heart.
they are each so unique and amazing in their own ways
...I pray they never loose sight of the talents and gifts God has given them,
but that they embrace, grow and follow their dreams.

We have been spending a lot of time in the garden lately,
harvesting baskets full of beauty,
weeding, playing, hunting, digging, weeding more
and just being.

I am so thankful for the many willing hands,
and it makes my heart happy that it is more than work to them
...it's a way of life
and so much more.

The littles love to harvest more than weed
and when they aren't harvesting peas and greens and tomatoes,
they are hunting frogs and digging in the dirt.

They big boys are awesome at weeding,
when they aren't making weapons and games out of weeds
and chasing each other through the garden.

Grandma & Grandpa move this week,
the youngest four are going to have a hard time adjusting.
At least we can still see them when we go into town.

It will be a good change though,
a change that we are all ready for.
at least we think...

Some neighbors of ours, well, they live 20ish miles away
but anyway.... they saw a mountain lion in their pasture this week.
We saw one 2 years ago near our farm, but never again.
kinda scary.

And completely unrelated,
the girls and Ozzie keep saying they hear a wild cow in the woods...
and continually talk about how if it's a mama it would be nice,
but if it's a bull it would chase them.
imaginations.running.wild.

the kids have been working on a fort-hide-out-shop-house,
what have you, in the woods for some time now.
They've cleared branches, smoothed out the rough floor,
brought chairs, tables, and most recently lights.

It's a pretty special spot really,
i'll have to get some pictures of it....
this one below is one from a campground recently.
they make forts every.where.we.go.

I had the big boys write out goal cards for themselves recently...
instead of telling them what I want them to do,
 I wanted to know what they wanted to do :: for themselves.

I was pleasantly surprised at what their goals were.
Vance wanted to learn more history and find an animal activist group to get involved in.
He also wanted to spend one-on-one time with each of the littles kids everyday.
That boy has a huge heart and it shows.

Grayson wants to read through the whole bible this year
and his science-tech goals were almost more than I could understand. ha.
they had a lot more goals, those were just a few.

Gavin told me to make his goals for him,
and then he just wanted to copy Vance's goals,
but finally he came up with some of his own.
His favorite one is...
do something nice for everyone in the family each day.

I asked the little kids too, and got responses like this...
sing to the kittens
build legos
play in the dirt
have a baby sister
have a baby brother
play house
paint pictures
love Jesus
eat squash?!
get treats at Grandma's house
fun.fun.

speaking of squash...
the kale chips have been such a hit,
I am making squash and zucchini chips too.
yum.yum.yum.

we roasted zucchini, squash and carrot sticks in the oven,
with coconut oil, sea salt and some with crushed red pepper.
oh they were so good and so easy.
there is a picture on instagram if you want to see...

I am being extremely distracted
by the bumping and moving around in my belly right now.
It's awesome.

and that's about it friends....

:: Well hello there ::

I've been staring at this empty page for 10 minutes now,
thoughts of what to say coming and going,
but nothing feels right.

I've been gone so long it's like I've forgotten how to do this whole blogging thing...
and maybe that's a good thing.
being away from the computer,
away from watching others lives through a window,
away from sharing with others online...
it's helped me rediscover some things.

There has been lots of change going on around here,
spending almost 4 months on the road....
has a way of doing that to you. {grin}
We've grown as a family, learned as a family & discovered so much.
I'll have to write an entire post just on that.

We have been home for a nearly 2 weeks,
and I still haven't unpacked the rv.
Well, we all brought a few things out, but not much.
It's still our home and it won't be long before we're back in it
...we already have a couple summer trips planned.

Adjusting to being back on the farm has been harder than I thought
...we really settled into the simplicity of life on the road.
Less space, less stuff, less distraction.
Not to mention we came home to sewer trouble. sigh.

Funny story...
I had big plans for our first trip to town when we got back to the farm.
One of the stops being the grocery store.
Myself and all six kids marched into our local grocery ready to stock up,
We quickly filled the cart with what looked like a lot of food.
...remember we had been shopping for a small rv fridge for the last few months.
At the check-out the cashier commented on how "healthy we ate".
We're defiantly back in meat and potatoes North Dakota!
On to store number 2 where did the same thing,
and heard a very similar comment from the cashier.
It looked like a lot of food...
until we got home and started putting it all in the fridge.
It only filled up half of one fridge and a quarter of the other fridge.
I guess we were really out of the habit of buying big and being an hour from the store.
I didn't make the same mistake this week...
our fridges are now bursting at the seams! {grin}

We haven't had much, scratch that, any down time since we got back.
Farming is back in full force,
the farm yard is full of semi trucks, tractors, gators, & trucks
and the lull of big engines is continual.
Even in all the chaos there is such a peace about farming.

My awesome husband tilled the entire garden for me.
I have a pile of organic heirloom seeds waiting to be planted
and now it's just a last frost waiting game.
Any day now, any day.
I can hardly wait!

We're back in full swing with school.
well as full swing as this eclectic, unschooling, homeschooling mama can get.
We ordered a few new school books for the summer
...i'll have to share what we're doing in another post.
Vance had his 1st of 2 days of homeschooling testing today,
we missed it over the winter so he is making it up with a local friend & teacher.
She already graded the first part and he scored a 99 & 98, ranking at 7.9th grade.

I have so many stories and pictures to share with you from our trip.
I had picked out my favorites and edited them when I could along the road,
hoping to share them before now. Ha!
Well, now that we are home we realized that they didn't back up and I lost them all. sigh.
At least I still have the negatives.
I promise i'll be sharing very soon,
I am bursting at the seams now that we are home.

although, I'm not sure if anyone is still around here?!
::::::::crickets chirping::::::::
I am not one to be too concerned with stats,
but I was a little sad when I saw I had lost so many readers.
smaller is better, right!!

Well I think I have filled you in on almost everything
...for today that is.
It's great to be back friends!
Talk to you soon!

just wanted to say

today

was

much

better

And seriously,
THANK YOU
...for sharing your hearts, lifting me up with your encouraging words
 & listening to me.

You guys are awesome!

and now...
goodnight friends

the day I wanted to quit

Despite sleeping in...
having hot apple cider, fruit & granola waiting for them when they woke,
all but 2 of my children woke up in a...
 where are my pink pants, don't look at me, I don't want my apple cider hot,
kind of mood.

Devotionals went well, but cleaning up after breakfast didn't.
Nor did the morning chores.

The cats spilled their tuna on the porch
and the dog ran away with the dish.

There was enthusiasm to start school,
but not actually do school.

Everyone needed my help at the same time,
and I couldn't keep up so I let them take a break while I worked one-on-one.
Which left some thinking that wasn't fair.

Math was horrible today, for everyone.
either they didn't understand, didn't want to do it or didn't like the way I was helping.

Someone lost their one and only favorite pencil
...and another child threw theirs across the room.

The sun was shining and the outdoors was calling us,
so we took a blanket and our books outside.

The girls were running around us in circles,
and the cats wouldn't stay off our books.

All six of the kids sat and listened to the littles Bible story,
and then answered the questions for them
...which left 2 girls and little boy, well, mad.

Someone pretended they couldn't read the words
...hoping I would let them quit, or give them the answer.
I did neither.

Ozzie wrote his name on the girls school book,
they scribbled on his.

The sun went behind the clouds and it turned much cooler,
which seemed to turn their mood even cooler.
sigh.

The only one that had finished school,
was called out to the field.

There are days when you push and days when you don't
...and I couldn't figure out which type of day this was.

I wanted to quit.
Send them to public school.
I actually started thinking about what it would be like.

The time I would have, to.....
do all those things I don't get done when you're homeschooling.
Or at least not get done with any timeliness.

I remembered the days when 2 were gone at school, 2 or 4 would nap,
and I would sit down with my melted chocolate & peanut butter with a big bowl of sliced bananas.
Relax, read, blog, watch good 'ole Young and the Restless.

Laundry was almost always done by afternoon,
my kitchen floor was clean and there were no piles of dishes in the sink.
The bathroom was spotless and beds were always made.
Dinners were planned, cooked and served on time.
Part of me misses those days.

And then it started raining on me, our blanket and school books.
We ran inside and then I heard my name on the radio to go pull the trucks in.
I put on an adventures in odyssey for the kids.

There was peace and quiet while I made dinner...
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with leftover black bean soup.

We ate dinner and everyone, who was home, helped clean up.
We took baths, put on pajamas and read a book.

I heard the call on the radio to go pick up my boy, man and grandpa from the field.
The van battery was dead, again.

Then I let the bigs listen to another Adventures in Odyssey while I put the girls to bed.
we sang songs, talked about family & said our prayers.

Ozzie told me I was beautiful and Vance said dinner was nice.
Grayson gave me a long hug and Gavin said I was the best mom ever.

I wanted to quit today, but I don't want to quit tonight.
I love being their teacher, even on the hard days.

I would miss so much of their lives if they weren't here all day
and I'm not sure I would know them so deeply if I didn't teach them at home.

I'm sure we'll have more hard days
and I'll think about what it would be like to send them to public school,
but like this one, that moment will pass.

Tonight I'm going to fall asleep tired and worn out
but crazy thankful for the blessings we have.

Oh, and really hopeful tomorrow is a better day!

homeschool

That's right, I am {finally} talking about homeschool!

Let's start with the burning question...
"what curriculum do you use?"

We are totally eclectic
a mix of unschool, classical & monntessori
...and I {love} it this way!

So what do we use?
here it goes...

{Bible}

we start our morning with a fun devotion during breakfast
then we move to the school room and start our Bible study
...we use Foundations {and love it}
We learn our Bible verses through copywork, illustration, motions, games & contests.

The 2 big boys do these Choosing Studies and their Sabbath school study on their own.

We also do Character building for families {love love}
Through the week we do skits, artwork, bible verse memory games & search the Bible for verses talking about the specific quality.

{History}

We listen to the CD and since we read together all the time, the kids really enjoy listening to someone else reading. {grin}
It's also just a great audio story time... the boys have been known to listen way ahead over and over again.
We also have the Activity Guide {a must}
and Test booklet {we use this written and verbally}
We combine this with an Encyclopedia, Time Line of the Bible & weekly library books.

{Math}

We started with Math-U-See... and while I do think it's a great program it just never felt right for our family. After LOTS of reading and researching we have fallen in love with more of a living math style. What are we using now?
we've continued to raid the math bookcase at the local library
we use a wide variety of purchased and created manipulatives
and we're still learning and growing and buying books! {grin}

{Science}

We just started Apologia Science this year
We started with Zoology 1 and absolutely LOVE it we'll be moving on to Zoology 2 next.
we use the activity notebook, a bird guide and lots of library books!

The boys are also working their way through the Snap Circuits student training program. It's so much fun it really just feels like you're playing... but you learn tons. It's awesome!

We also make crazy concoctions from a variety of books, some owned but mostly from the library

{Language Arts}

{Vocabulary & Spelling} Wordly Wise
We use words from WW lesson for spelling. Spelling City is a great resource.
We also just started Big words for Little kids and love it so far. Since only the 2 big boys do Wordly Wise I wanted to find something that the younger kids could use... turns out everyone enjoys this book though!

{Grammar} We use Daily Grammar for basic lessons and Grammar Blast is for fun review.
Both are free programs and very simple... which I like {grin}
I will also have the boys dissect our weekly bible verses for real life review.

{Handwriting & Composition} Christian Liberty Writing Series
We also do Copywork with Bible Verses and Books we're reading.
and good 'ole letter writing!

{creative writing} Story Starters is absolutely awesome! Sometimes the boys write their own and sometimes I let them speak their story and I'll write for them... just depends on their mood.

{Art}

and lots of creative works from coloring, sculpting, sewing, metal work, origami and beyond

{Geography}

We love reading Window On The World
and usually pair it with these online Geography games
and the Geography games we used with My Fathers World

{unit studies}

We love unit studies... except I don't really call them that. {grin}
Unit studies for us are just following a passion and learning all you can about it.

Right now Vance is doing an Endangered Animals study
and both boys are doing The unofficial Lego builders Guide

I think that about covers it
...at least as far as curriculum is concerned! {grin}

Let's talk about homeschooling...

As the school year is coming to an end I am becoming increasingly excited about planning for homeschool next year.

I know that we are supposed to do this next year... it's been on my heart for years and I have finally felt God's push to let me know 'It's time!'

I do however have many many questions floating around in my head.

So I thought I'd ask YOU!

I know there are lots of homeschool mamas out there... tell me all about it!

What curriculum do you use?

Tips or suggestions that really work well for you?

What does your daily routine look like?

How do you organize all of the books and things that go along with it?

Do you do one on one or all of your children together?

Do you supplement with outside classes... art, music, science, ect?

Do you participate in a local homeschool group?

Does your husband participate with the teaching?

Do you do lots of outings?

Has it been expensive for you?

anything else I should know?

********************************

now please... do not comment just to tell me homeschool is bad, ect. ect. ect. UNLESS you have direct experience. Were you homeschooled and have bad memories of it?
Did you try to homeschool your kids and it didn't work out?

I'm all for being real... let's just not turn this into a bashing session. {grin}

********************************

I can not wait to hear all that you have to say! I am so excited to start this journey and look forward to it's rewards and challenges! I have so much hope that this will be a positive step for our family.

Depending on what you all have to say I might put together a post like I did with laundry tips??

Come on now homeschool mamas! Let's hear it!
