my postage stamp kitchen

it's a tiny kitchen
a tiny old kitchen with ugly laminate floor
the tiniest kitchen I've ever had

one small trip to the grocery covers the floor with bags
one small meal covers the countertops
one cook & a few helpers overfill the kitchen

there is no dishwasher besides us
no pantry besides the cupboards
and no room for our fridge so it sits on the porch

it's our postage stamp kitchen
where we bump into each other as we cook
and wait in line to wash our dishes

it's where I prepare 3 meals a day
and make smoothies by the gallon
where we sing songs and make waffles with dad

it may be really small
and I may really wish to have a big kitchen one day
but today it's ours and I am so grateful for that

it's our postage stamp kitchen
ugly floor and all

  1. I've been reading your blog for a while now, and I'm so inspired by you! And to know that you have 6 kids and cook in a kitchen that small gives me hope! My little family of four downsized and moved into my husband's grandpa's basement 8 months ago, and it has a kitchenette, no oven, no dishwasher, no stove, no microwave. I have to go upstairs to do just about everything! Since moving in I have learned to be very creative using my crock pot, panini press/mini grill, and the microwave my inlaws purchased for us. I think I will be getting a hot plate this week, which will be a glorious day! Thank you for being an inspiration of parenting, survival and making the most of everything!

Thank you for sharing with me! We lived in my husbands grandparents basement for a while too, it was interesting for sure! :)

One of my favorite verses is Luke 16:10
"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much."

  3. Wow....you aren't kidding it is small!  It takes me back to our first home...college days.....6 years in a small mobile home with 4 people.....it was cozy and our memories are sweet.  God knew we would need something bigger when our home held 10 people though.  :)

  6. I could have written this, word for word ... the funny thing is our kitchen is over a third of our house ... but as frustrated as I get, I love my family and the stories that we are making here!

Oh, my I have a small kitchen but yours is probably smaller. No dishwasher here, still, and I do love my kitchen. I do!

  10. That's what we lovingly call a "one-butt" kitchen and I'm sure if we both have bigger kitchens some day, we'll miss bumping in to all those other bottoms that seem to congregate in that space at the same time.  :)
