::UPDATE:: Pray for Ozzie...

:::UPDATE:::
We're home and Ozzie is recovering... it didn't go as smoothly as it should have. We were told that we would be able to go into an induction room with Ozzie so we could be with him when he was put under. I mentioned this to the 1st nurse, the 2nd nurse, the 1st anesthesiologist and then when the 2nd anesthesiologist came in to get Ozzie {because shifts had changed during our LOOONNNNGGGG wait} he said that they didn't even have an induction room and that we needed to say goodbye to Ozzie right there and then or reschedule. He was less than kind and seemed very hardened to the delicate situation of a young child going into surgery. I said that we were concerned that Ozzie would freak out and would be a very bad situation... hence why we double checked this with everyone... and he said "it wouldn't be the first time we took a screaming child". Well.... NOT MY CHILD! {that's what I thought at least} We put him into the bed {cage} and he freaked out, Paul picked him up and walked him to the OR doors. The anesthesiologist took him and he started crying and screaming... it broke my heart.

The hour wait turned into almost 2 hours. When we were finally called to go in and see him I was in the middle of feeding the babies. I popped them off {grin} and ran back to see Ozzie. He was NOT happy. He had been crying, for how long who knows... he was very upset. {we were also told that we would be called in to see him as soon as he started to wake up... we think they tried to calm him down for a while first.} UGGGG! We scooped him up off the bed and tried to hold him but he was screaming boo-boo... stop over and over again. He screamed at us for probably 20-30 minutes. They ended up putting a breathing tube in his throat - even though we were told they weren't going to do that - so his throat is very sore too. My poor boy!!!

So... we're home now... Papa is staying the night and we're just taking it easy. Thank you so much for all of your prayers! My heart goes out to all of you have had to go through something like this... you have no idea how hard it is until you are doing it yourself. We are SO blessed to have healthy children. I can not imagine coping with a sick child and watching them go through so much on a regular basis.

If you could all please keep Ozzie in your prayers... that he would heal quickly and that the pain would disappear, also that he would not remember how traumatized he was today.

Thank you bloggie prayer warriors!

** oh and I did NOT forget about the giveaway... I swear it's coming... in my spare time. Hee-Hee!

{original post}

and a little bit for me. Please! Our little Ozzie is having surgery tomorrow at 9;40am... it's a simple routine surgery, but scary none the less. I'm fretting over the details... having to walk away from him, leaving him in the doctors care, being put under, the iv, not being with him when he awakes and every thing in-between. I know he'll be okay and I'm making a much bigger deal of it than it is... but I've never had to bring a child to the hospital, wait in a waiting room while my child is being 'operated' on. Heck... the only times my kids have been to the hospital is when they've come to meet their new brother or sisters.

So at 7am we'll be headed out the door for children's hospital. My dad is driving 3 hours to come meet us at the hospital so he can sit in the waiting room with the twins so Paul and I can both be with Ozzie during prep and when he's being put under. We'll be waiting for 70-80 minutes before we can see him again. I'm sure it will feel much longer. Ozzie has no idea what's happening and I hope he never does.

if you have a moment, would you please pray for Ozzie. Pray that Ozzie wouldn't be scared or even know what's going on at all. Also, pray for the surgeon, anesthesiologist & nurses... that they would care for our son as if he was their own. That God would guide their hands & keep their minds focused. And pray for Peace for Paul and I as we leave Ozzie and wait.

It is so wonderful to know that there are so many people out there praying for our family. We appreciate each and everyone of you... the power of prayer is mighty big!

I'll update late afternoon/evening after we are home.

thanks again my bloggie prayer warriors!!!

  3. I know what you are feeling. My son has undergone two surgeries needing to be put under. It's not fun to walk away but I pray that you feel Jesus' arms wrapped around your little boy tomorrow. He will hold him for you. Bless you and praying for a smooth recovery also. :)

  4. I'll definitely be praying for Ozzie and for you and Paul. Our son had surgery when he was around Ozzie's age too, and it was certainly harder for me than it was for him!

  8. My little guy has had 2 surgeries in his short 2 1/2 years of life. His first was at 11 months and lasted over 6 hours! I do know the feeling of walking away and leaving your child in someone elses care.
    We will be praying for Ozzie, and praying for the surgeon to get a good nights sleep and to awake with steady hands. Big hugs to Ozzie

  10. Warren got his tonsils out when he was two and as he was going under anesthesia his last words were something about going to Starbucks ;) Of course I was bawling because it is a weird feeling walking away. I will say a little prayer for you both!

  12. Prayers! I'm sure you're not going to get good rest tonight either--as if having 6 little ones isn't enough trouble in the sleep department, worrying about the surgery is certainly not helpful, huh?!

  16. Oh my. I'm praying for Ozzie, and for you too!

    I know all of the feelings you describe so well. Dillon had to be put under so many times (both for surgeries and scans) and it didn't matter how minor the procedure was- I always had the same concerns. Of course you're going to worry a bit- Just means you're a good Momma...

    I'll be checking back for updates!

    I know the feelings you have right now. My son had to have surgery at 6 weeks old. He had pyloric stenosis. The doctors that did the surgery had done it routinely, but there is NOTHING routine about handing your son over to nurses and doctors.

  25. I will keep everyone in my prayers. What exactly is he getting done?

    My two year old just had surgery on Oct 31st and I did cry when they took him from us at the door. I hated every second of it but two weeks later we are just fine. Carson will have another surgery on Nov 24th and I'm more afraid that he is going to remember and really freak out.

    Anyways, I understand your feelings and will pray for Ozzie.

  27. I will be praying for you guys and sweet Ozzie.

    I Understand how you feel about sending your little one off to have surgery. One of my sons had a miner surgery 2 months ago. I was so anxious about it. When the time came for us to send him off with the Nurse to the surgery room, I felt so at peace and my son did so well. It went so much better then I had imagined. I know it was because so many were praying!

    Hopefully you can get rest tonight!

    Love and prayers,

  30. Lord,
    Be with Ozzie today. Give him peace as he undergoes surgery, and be with him through his recovery. Lord, be with his team of doctors and nurses, and give them the wisdom and skills to perform Ozzie's surgery effectively and carefully.
    Please be with Brittany and Ozzie's family as they support him today and during his recovery. Give Brittany and Paul peace as they wait to see their little boy.
    Please give this family comfort as we know you have them in the palm of your hands.

  45. I am praying right now and throughout the day. My younger son had emergency surgery at eight weeks; no matter if it is "routine" for the surgeons, it isn't for the parents or the children! I totally understand your concerns and worries. It brings me to tears when I remember it myself, but I am looking forward to reading your next post that tells us all went well and that Ozzie is already back to his normal demeanor as if nothing even happened. Thinking of you! :)

My 4th son had to have surgery when he was 2.5 months old (he was born with a clubbed foot, and he had to have surgery to release his Achilles tendon). It was so scary even though it was a simple and straight-forward procedure. It's never simple when it's your own child!

  65. Hi Brittany...this is now a post-op comment....my hubby is an anaesthetist {and I was an icu RN}and it's still hideous to go through this with your child....
    Don't fret too much apparently it is part of the waking up process that the child screams their head off and you can't settle them at all! It's awful but I have been on the other end and almost every child is the same....that said poor Ozzie and you guys.....I really do understand. {plus we had similar issues with staff telling us one thing and then seeming to change thier minds....about how many parents could be with our little boy in recovery...it was empty but their policy stated one parent...we were not even 5 feet from where Daddy was sitting and he wasn't allowed to come hold his boy with me. I actually challenged them and they eventually let us both sit with him....but not without death stares...I told them they should sort it out before the child goes to surgery so parents are very clear on how it will happen post op...they could not have cared less!!!!!}
    Done now!

    rest easy

    Susan :):)

  66. So sorry that you and Ozzie had to go through all that. The only surgery that any of our little ones have had to go through was when #3 was 24 hours old, so we didn't have to endure the screaming and emotions from him. I can understand your pain and fear, though! We waited for 5 hours for surgery to be over! I will continue to pray that he heals quickly and forgets all about the trauma (Momma too!) :)

  67. So sorry this experience was made worse by someone who apparently had no bedside manner! Max was almost 3 when he had his first set of tubes in his ears and his adenoids removed (same surgery). I told the doctors and nurses that he would probably freak out when we left him so they were able to give him something to "relax" him. It worked...for him...John and I, not so much. I think we were the ones who needed it! Thankfully we had wonderful nurses and doctors who took Max's mind off the wagon ride to the OR. Unfortunately the recovery room was a nightmare! He was just waking up when they called us back and was screaming like they were cutting his arms off. He was trying to rip the i.v. out of his arm. They wouldn't take it out until he drank something or ate some popsicle and he wouldn't eat or drink until it was out. This lasted about 45 minutes and they had to give him a breathing treatment because he was so worked up that he started coughing like he had the croup! A year later, second set of tubes and tonsils out, same thing pre-op and post-op, except this time I was pregnant and by myself with him because John had to stay home with Abby. This past April he had third set of tubes, freaked out about taking the sedative because it tasted bad but the recovery was easier because...no i.v.!

    I pray that Ozzie recovers quickly and that his poor throat feels better soon.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hey Brittany,
    I follow your blog fervently and I wanted to try to ease your anxiety a little bit :) I am a pediatric critical care nurse and I specialize in anethesia in children. I muddle through this same situation daily and have been through it twice with my own children and will do it twice more in December with my children again!!

    Ultimately, it up to the anethesiologist as to whether or not you are able to be with yoru child during induction. It sounds to me like you ended up with a real jerk; that's too bad!! The great truth of the matter is that Little Ozzie would have screamed and cried regardless while waking from anethesia because of the gases that he received and the IV medications that he received will provide some amnesic effects, thereby erasing from his mind the terrible thought of being taken from you and your husband. This is a good thing in children!!

    Not knowing his procedure, he will be hoarse from the tube in his throat for several day and ultimately will not remember a thing of the surgery by the weekend!!

    I hope he is well and that you and your family don't have to do this again anytime soon, because you are right...it is not fun!! no matter what way you slice it~!!!

    Take care and my prayers are with Ozzie tonight!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Poor little man! Praying for quick recovery for him and you! You should report your experience to the patient advocate at the hospital. They need to know and will not be pleased at how you or your baby were treated today. I know it is over for you, but you don't want anyone else to endure that kind of #$%^&* either! Sorry, I really hate to hear that he was so miserable...it was totally unnecessary! Thank God that children are so resilient. i'm sure Ozzie is quite happy to be with his loving family tonight! Hope everyone gets a much needed good night's rest!

    Best,
    kelly

  70. I agree that if you have the time and energy (ha!), let a patient advocate or someone at the hospital know that your family was not treated as well as you could have been, making an already difficult situation even more painful. {As a sidenote, we had an AWFUL nursery nurse when we gave birth to Bug and I still regret not letting the hospital know in a timely manner about her ridiculous behavior toward us and our son.}

    Anyway, looking at Ozzie's smiling, cake-covered face right now and hoping that little guy is resting and that tomorrow is a better day for all! =)

  75. Glad you are home with Ozzie, and glad you were able to "be there" for him as much as possible. He won't remember a thing. When I was his age I was hospitalized for days with viral encephalitis...and numerous spinal taps and whatnot later, I don't remember a thing. :)

  78. Hey Brittany,

    On 14 Feb this year Joshua had to have a minor op to close up some things. The op was supposed to be only an hour but 4 hrs later they brought him back. I was so worried about the aesthetic. He was only 8 weeks old. The next day I found out that the scales at the hospital were 1.1 kg's out. The anaesthetist was so pedantic about the weight. It didn't want it to be even 100 grams out. When I went to his follow up visit I mentioned it to the surgeon and all he would say is that explains a lot!! I wonder what happened!! Thank goodness I had a specialist paediatric anaesthesiologist because the surgeon said that if anything was going to go wrong it was with anaesthetic and it would happen fast.

    Glad to hear he is okay. Will continue to pray for a speedy recovery!!

    *hugs*

  79. as much as you and all of us love Ozzies name, i feel you were judged because your kid's name is Ozzie. sad-but true. he was an ass cuz he saw the name. what a jerk.

    ReplyDelete
  80. yeah, sounds like some not-so-sensitive people there. I work in an OR and yes, parents can't come back to the room ever and yes, if anything but tubes in the ears, they get a breathing tube (to protect the lungs). But all of that should have been explained by the anesthesiologist and the nursing staff. If you ever have another medical thing with kids, they also can give them preop Versed, which relaxes them. That is how most of our kids go back...all smiley and stoned. Just some advice for next time...glad he is doing well.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I just got around to catching up with blogs after about a week. I will be praying for his recovery.

    We had a similar story when our son had surgery in August. THey tried to calm him down before we got there and I could hear him crying down the hallway while we were talking to the surgeon. I finally just got up and left so that I could go and take care of him. AS soon as the nurse handed him to me, he stopped crying. He just needed his mama. It is so unfair that doctors and nurses think it is ok for kids to be scared like that. It is SO not ok. They need their parents. Anyway :) I am praying for quick healing and lots of rest for you all!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Oh poor little guy. I know how scary it is to go through all of that with your child. I do hope he is feeling better now.
