I am OH SO excited! Thumb sucking is so darn cute!

We now have 3 soon to be 4 thumb suckers in the house right now...
Grayson quit when he was 2ish and Vance only sucked his thumb for a few months
Gavin and Ozzie both still suck their thumb
{and no i'm not worried about their teeth}

  1. Connor was never a thumbsucker or a paci baby! If it didn't contain food he wasn't interested! LOL!! Kendall, on the other hand, was an undercover thumb sucker! http://ourlifeinablogshell.blogspot.com/2008/01/i-have-been-us-sure-lately-if-kendall.html
This post will clue you into what I mean!! She was hysterical! Never wanted a paci though!

Eliza is so adorable! I love when they are learning to suck their thumbs!

  2. Too cute! Mine are fist suckers, but they haven't figured out how to get just their thumb in their mouths. Neither are interested in pacifiers, so it's how they self-soothe. I was a thumb sucker until I was 7, and I never had any teeth issues because of it!

  3. Thumb sucking is cute but I would not want your orthodontist bill in years to come even though you say that you are not worried about their teeth.

  4. I sucked my thumb until I was 6 or so, and I had braces for 1 1/2 years. BUT, thumb sucking didn't cause my teeth problems, I had an overbite because my mouth was shaped that way, no way a thumb could have done that. I also still sleep with a blanket and I'm a mom!

My kiddos never really sucked their thumbs. Hagen did for a few days.

You'll have to take a picture if they ever suck their thumbs at the same time. Too cute!!

  5. Too cute! My little girl is a thumb sucker too.

  6. I'm not worried about their teeth because I've talked to a dentist and done my own research that shows that thumb sucking while young and quitting before your perm. teeth are in causes NO problems. I sucked my thumb until I was 5ish and I never had braces.

    I think it's a wives tale, or that created by the paci industry {gasp}

  7. Hey Brittney, you are absolutely right. I was quite concerned about my 4 year old still sucking his thumb and have had now two pediatric dentists say that as long as he quite before the permanent teeth come in he will be fine. There is some narrowing of the pallette as it conforms to the shape of the thumb so they can have kind of higher roofs of their mouths. But in the grand scheme of things it would be ridiculous to worry over it! They WILL outgrow it at some point ;)

  8. ADORABLE! I had only one thumb sucker! Wish they had all picked it up!

  11. Yup, I was a thumb sucker too and never had braces or any issues with my mouth. To this day, my left thumb is skinnier though...HAHAHA. =)

    That pic is too cute!

  12. That picture is adorable. :)
I think babes look cute like that, but I discouraged that and pacifiers in my kids as babies because I was concerned that it'd be more difficult to discourage as they got older.
I've read that many of them stop on they own but I've seen so many that didn't.

How are parents to stop their child from thumb sucking in the event the child hasn't stopped before the permanent teeth are set to come in ?

Also, I'm not so sure about it being an old wives tale unless all the under age 4 kids that I've seen with that round overbite or buck teeth just coincidentally had it in addition to sucking their thumbs. I've seen other thumb suckers that didn't get the overbite though so I've supposed that it varies by child.

  13. Lol. At my typo. :)
It should read "...many of them stop on THEIR own..." I know you know what I meant though. :o)

  14. Aww, cute! You need a photo of them all lined up sucking their thumbs together, lol. That would be a hoot!

My boys were both paci babies. Never had any interest in their thumbs. Vivi wants neither so far...Well, she wants "the bewb" 24/7- ha! But that's another story ;)

  15. My kids never sucked their thumbs! What is that about?? They both dissed the paci, too. I never really thought about that, until now. crazy.

  16. yeah, i've heard the teeth thing isn't such a big deal either...but what about all the germs. hands go on everything and then right in the mouth????

tulip refused the paci and i refused her thumb... ;-) it is so cute, but didn't want to worry abuot the "weaning" from the thumb and the germs.

  17. Sweet pic. I don't think of any of us sucked our thumbs...but I do remember my sister taking a pacifer. She called it a nu-nu. Then one day, when she was more than a year old, my Mom ran it over with their minivan and it was no more.

I sent three recipes yesterday from my gmail acct--the name on it is mrs boo radley--just in case your e-mail acct didn't recognize me.

  19. So sweet....Ethan is my thumb-sucker, and it is like the cutest thing ever. I'm not worried about their teeth either :-)

  20. Hi. I've been reading for a while. I think I got here from a blog awards site. Just wanted to chime in about teeth. ;)

I'm a certified dental assistant and had a son that sucked a paci for 3 years. Paci and thumb sucking CAN change the shape of the mouth and cause an overjet or open bite in their mouths. (A bite is determined to be open if when biting on the back teeth the front top teeth don't close over the bottom teeth - an obvious gap.) When they stop sucking the bite can correct itself some. Most of the time not all the way. The son that sucked the paci just got his upper braces off today. I would let my son do it again if I had to choose again, but I know the chances of braces are high for those who suck pacis or thumbs, fingers, etc. Not saying you should stop your babies from doing it by no means. Just wanted to put some more information out there.

    Your family is beautiful.

  21. How precious is that picture?! I just want to eat those cheeks!

No thumb suckers out of my two. They were, however, hold on to your seat, "belly-button-lovers". Yes, there is such an animal. And I have 2 of them. They would eat, sleep and walk around with their shirts raised and their favorite finger in their belly button. Each child had a different favorite finger.

My 9 year old is over all of that but not my 5 year old angel! She LOVES her "button" as we call it. It's just so cute. Well, that is, until my oldest raised the shirt of a portly waitress who was trying to take our order. Caroline was apparently looking for her button. Talk about embarrassing! At least she was only around 2 at the time and the waitress thought it was funny. WHEW! That could've been really bad!

  22. my youngest was a thumb sucker, and although I hated the idea of her "never" stopping, she was very cute doing it as well, haha! (and yes, she DID quit eventually!!)

  30. I was a thumb sucker for a long time....and no issue with teeth related to it.
My son was pushed to use a paci by Daddy and the in-laws, and I'm happy to report that in a 2 week visit with my family in WI, I have gotten my 27 month old OFF the paci.......I'm so happy.

  31. Still lovin following your blog. I put a link on our site to yours, I just wanted to make sure that was ok with you.

As for the thumb thing, both our kids sucked on their hands not thumbs, and then went to a paci. We took it from both of them when they were about 9 months to a year old and it was never a problem. I think if you wait to long it makes it more difficult.

It blows me away when I see kids at the store that are like 3 to 4 years old still sucking on one.

  38. I was a HUGE thumb sucker...

but all of kiddies are paci suckers! I was kind of bummed... I think thumb sucking is soo much cuter than a piece of plastic..

BUT paci sucking is sooooo much easier to get rid of:) SOO much easier!!!

  39. That picture is absolutely gorgeous.

My son rejected both the thumb and the paci. He was all boob all the time!

  40. All 3 of mine are/were thumb suckers and two of them would hold their ear with the other hand. Very great for newborns when they can learn this. Not so cute when they are 5 with buck teeth. If they ever get a lisp and need dental work and it starts to bother you...come talk to me. I know what to do. :-)

    very cute picture!

  44. I saw your button on another blog and it piqued my interest. I have four boys ages 8, 4 and twin 20 month olds and everyone keeps teasing me that I'll finally get my girl and it will be twins again. So tell me, is it possible to survive? Your kids are soo cute! My four year old sucks his thumb and I don't see it as a problem until people mention it. (like the inlaws) Anyway, glad I found your blog. Oh, and how did you get those links on the top through blogspot? I wish I could figure that out!

  45. 3/4 suck or sucked their thumbs over here. Hayden just stopped because he was made fun of by his cousin hee hee

  46. my little chloe is a thumb-sucker too. I just adore it...
I'll hate it later when the orthodontist tells me how much it will cost to "fix" her teeth, but for now, it saves me much headache....since she's able to soothe herself. I like that - alot!
