where else?

can you see the midnight sky {light} up...

like this...

Where else can you look up and see a cloud overhead....
and then realize YOU are the only ones under that cloud.

Where else can you see {thousands} of spectacular stars in the night sky.

Where else can you walk to the clothes line in your bath towel.

Where else can you leave all the blinds open and not worry about someone seeing in.

Where else can you have a dirty car and truthfully say you JUST washed it.

Where else can you see rain falling BUT not feel it.

Where else can you feel and hear the wind EVERYDAY.

Where else can you drive down the road in the dark with no lights on but still be able to see by the moonlight.

Where else can you find SO MANY salamanders. {grin}

Where else can you hear birds wings flapping overhead.

Where else can you see shadows from clouds miles away.

Where else do you not have to worry about missing trash day because you can burn it anyday.

Where else can little-big boys learn how to drive.

Where else do you need sweatshirts and jeans and sundresses & flip flops in the summer.

Where else can your children scream {out of excitement of course} and you don't have to wonder if the neighbors heard. {grin}

Where else can you watch a thunder and lightening storm but never feel it.

Where else can you hear something coming down the road for a mile {or more}.

Where else do you drive in the middle of the road...
except over the crest of the hills.

Where else do you see roads underwater.

Where else do you see fields upon fields of beauty.

Not where we're from...
that's FOR sure!

I'm curious!

Do you live in the city?

or

Do you live in the country?

what DO you love about where you live?

  1. I live in the suburbs. My husband grew up in the country and we do enjoy going to visit his parents who still live out there. I like being right down the street from the grocery store, post office, bank, school, etc!

  2. None of those questions apply to me--we're right in the middle of Los Angeles.

Where else can you take the city bus from your corner to the beach?

Where else can you sit in traffic for 3 hours to drive 15 miles?

Where else can you see several movie stars on a trip to the farmer's market?

Where else can you play outside (in the warm sun) on Christmas day?

    We love it here!

  3. I live in the breadbasket of the world the San Joaquin Valley. When I was in London I missed the bright sun, fields, and earthy smell. The people too - the young dreaming of being somewhere else like SF and the settled in their ranch homes and SUV's. This will always be home.

  4. I live in an Army town. I love how every type and age of person lives within a few streets of me. I love how I'm surrounded by strangers but I'll see the same person over and over again at the grocery, the sub shop, the laundry mat, until we feel like old friends but have never said a word. I love how the city hums during the day but is silent enough to hear revelry play at 6 am from 5 miles away.

  5. We live in the country in the same state you are in and we LOVE IT!!! We love it for many of the reasons you gave and many more. We love the spectacular sunsets, the peacefulness, people stopping in the middle of roads to visit with someone else, massive flocks of geese landing in our fields, moose just down the road, room for kids to run, gotta love the country, specifically here!

  6. I am originally from Baker, Montana!! But now I reside in Arizona. Growing up, I can relate to each and every situation you have posted here. It was a wonderful childhood!

  7. I live in Western Australia, and I love it that I can be in the middle of the city, and it's still only about an hour's drive to get to the bush, where I can be the only person within hearing distance.
I also love the huge flat open plains, with an uninterrupted horizon :D

  8. We live in a city and I like being so close to everything because I frequently forget something at the store and need to run back out for it. We did live about 20 min out of the city and I thought that was pretty conveniently close until we moved right into the city. But we have a nice big yard for our kids so it's the best of both worlds.

  9. We live an the "edge" of a city (a very small one), in Michigan.

I love that we have a beautiful Fall, Winter, Summer, and Spring.

    I love the mild summers

I love the orchards and the rolling hills up north

    I love all the lakes

  10. Small town in the south where I was raised from birth.

I love hot summers, somewhat cold winters and lovely springs and falls.

I love being able to visit the beach, the mountains with a drive of a couple of hours. (The lake in 30 minutes.)

I love that I know most of the people I meet in town.

I love that I know just about every road in the county!

  11. Where you are sounds like heaven on earth to me. I grew up in the country, but not as country as that. My heart longs to be where no one else can see...or hear...and there is peace like that!

    ReplyDelete
  12. We live in the country...but we're only 20 minutes from the city.

I love how we can see SO many stars at night.
I love that I can look out my window and see fields of corn, wheat, or whatever they plant that year.
I love that I can take my children on the most beautiful walks. Quiet, peaceful...God's country.
Oh..and not to mention that I get to see cows and their babies on a daily basis :-)

  13. I live on an island, and I like it ok. I love that I can hear the waves at night and the calming sound of the blaring fog horn on the lighthouse.
Im a country girl at heart though...

  14. Country mice here too, but not quite the privacy you guys have on your land it sounds like. Lovely! Still, I could relate to most of your post, beautiful!

  15. I live in the suburbs, about a ten minute's drive from the city (or an hour walk). Our house backs onto farmland and fields, which is nice for walking in, and because we live on a hill, we have the most spectacular view of the city! I feel I'm conveniently placed, but sadly don't live far enough from the city for the stars to be all that visible amidst the light pollution

  16. We are all city, top floor condo building.. 6X4 foot balcony, right off a main road. We hear lots of cars, firetrucks, and dogs barking, but I love it and to me it's home. However once upon a time I lived on a farm that the closest neightbor was NOT in walking distance, you saw the storms but never felt them, and noises, well only nature sounds could be heard

  17. I think all those things apply to our little piece of this planet. We live in the country but I am from the city and when I go visit my mom in the city there is such an amazing difference but I have to say I wouldn't change anything about where we live. We even have a little country store not far from our house/farm. God Bless and I hope things are looking a little brighter for you!

  18. Love this post. You should play a game with your boys. Have them look at the stars at night and have them find Satellites. I love going out on the boat at the lake at night time and looking for them.

  19. Salamanders rock! Take some pictures...

  20. We live in the country in Illinois. Born and raised a city girl, I surprising love where we live for all of the reasons that you stated (except we don't have the salamanders).

  21. We live in a city of about 160,000people. Close to the second largest city in our state. I love it because everything you'd ever want (stores, restaurants, ect.)is within 5 miles but yet the traffic is minimal- unlike the Chicago suburbs near us (ugh!). I wouldn't mind moving out into the country someday though- as long as it's within 10-15 minutes of a larger city. ;-)

  22. You described where I live in Iowa exactly! I was just thinking how I wished it would rain so my car would get clean :) Darn gravel! Glad you are having such a great time up north. Being in the country begins to relax a person!

  23. We live in the city but a very country setting! I hope to soon live in the country more, where you are sounds like heaven!

  24. I currently live in the suburbs in the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. I've always loved being a Utah girl. I love being surrounded by mountain ranges. I love being able to tell North, East, South, West simply by what mountain is in the area. I love the wildflowers in the mountains in the summer- every color and type immaginable as far as the eye can see. I love the dry air. I love the big blue sky, the starry night, the moon rising over the ridge of the mountains, and the most amazing sun rises and sun sets stretching from the mountain tops all the way across the sky. I love all four seasons and the beautiful changes they bring. I love a good snowstorm. I love the wildlife near the foothills where I lived most my life: mule deer, fox, toads, quail, hawks, falcons, song birds, migrating flocks to the Great Salt Lake, skunks, snakes... I love the smell of summer rain, fresh cut grass, chimney smoke in the Autumn, and wet tree bark on a hike. I love that I live nearby goats and horses and waterfowl. I love growing and using food from my garden and cherry tree. I love that any store I need is within walking distance.

  25. I live outside of LA, so the questions are different for me. But I also live in the neighborhood I grew up in. I love that I know every face here - and every dog and tree and car. I love that I cannot hear the traffic and that I can hear the coyotes hunting at night. I love that I can smell my neighbor baking cookies on Sunday afternoons and I love that I can smell the rain before it hits.

  26. I live in the city, but we visit my inlaws often, where they live backs up to a state park. oh my stars i cant wait till a house on their street opens up for sale. ill snatch it up in a heartbeat, the sound of crickets at twilight, the stars and sta and moo(stars and moon) that my children pic out of the sky thrill me that they can see them.

  27. Where else does every driver of every car you meet wave to you?

    I loved ND!

  29. I live in the country! And I love it! Watching it rain off in the distance is always fun. So are beautifully moonlit nights!

  30. ALl of those things are true about my home in the Texas Hill Country. (except for needing sweatshirts in the summer!) We love the wide open spaces, big skies, and friendly people. LIFE IS GOOD!

  31. I live in a small town in Wisconsin. We live on a little lake with only a couple neighbors. It's heavily wooded so you feel like you are the only one. I love it here. We are originally from a big city in Minnesota. Moving here has been such a blessing! We are so much more relaxed. Everything around us is beautiful. My favorite thing is seeing bald eagles when ever I drive somewhere. Sometimes there will be one just flying over our dock. Amazing. Right now the leaves are changing on all the trees. This is my favorite time of the year. Just beautiful! So in the end I know exactly what your are experiencing. Living here has really let us appreciate what God has created.

  32. I live an hour of north of San Francisco in a city population 150,000. I grew up in a city with a population now of 15,000. I would love to move to a smaller city with less neighbors and noise sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oooh, love that pic! That's awesome!

We're rooted in New England through and through, and I generally love it here. The seasons here are beautiful!

We have the best of rural and urban living- an hour or so above Boston and below Portland (ME), within an hour from the beaches, mountains, and lakes, and we're in the outskirts of a pretty small city (Concord, NH's capitol) so we're surrounded by forest and woods, but everything we need is either a quick drive (or lengthy walk!) away. We also have plenty of safe roads and trails for biking and hiking nearby, and I LOVE that I can walk my kiddos to school on beautiful days..like today!

That said, I just caught a PBS special on Glacier National Park this morning, so now I want to move out there, ha! Our country has SO MANY treasures to explore- we are truly blessed!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd love to take a road trip soon with our kids and see different parts of this beautiful country!

Here I love the water (The Sound, San Juans, Ocean) on one side and the beautiful mountains on the other.
The cities close to farms and a few quaint little towns.
Maybe just the diversity of our area?

  35. I could have typed many of those same comments about where we live. What I love about it...we live on the same piece of property as my in-laws and grandfather-in-law. Multi-generational is awesome. We live in rural Maine surrounded by trees and nothing else. We can't see the road but we can hear things coming & have to decide if they are coming here or not. It's great & I wouldn't trade it for anything.

  36. I live in in between Denver and Boulder, 15 min from each.

Where else do you see the Rocky Mountains outside of your laundry room window?

Where else do you have sunshine almost every single day of the year, and yet still experience all 4 seasons?

Where else can it snow in the morning, and you can still play golf in the afternoon?

Where else but Colorado! As a transplant from Alaska, I can say CO is the best convergence of outdoors and amenities! We LOVE CO! (But I do miss the Northern Lights, and how you can actually smell the electricity in the air)

    ReplyDelete
  37. We live in the mountains....seeing snow capped Rockies daily...and the sun hitting the forests in various lights.

Seeing wild animals on my trail runs..and waterfalls..and moss covered trees in our rainforest life.

  38. We live on a beautiful island that has red clay soil and roads. It is a vibrant landscape that includes many rolling hills with large rounds bales waiting for pick up. Brightly coloured fishing boats waiting in the harbours for lobster season to start again. Fields full of dying potato plants just waiting to be dug and stored for the winter. We live on a 50 acre piece of land just on the outskirts of town and I love where I live. I only wish my family could live closer to me and my children.

  39. Hey,
We live in a small town on the outskirts of a bigger city. I LOVE living out it what I consider the country :)

  40. I live probably not to far from the farm on the canadian side. We live in a small town and moving to a farm. This life is a big change from the one we left behind in the big city. But my boy needs to run and be free

  41. We live in a suburb of Denver. I love it. In 20 minutes, we can be standing in the center of downtown Denver.

In 20 minutes, we can be at 8,000 feet, looking at a range of 14,000 foot peaks.

I feel like we have the best of both worlds.

  42. I grew up in Gillette, Wyoming....but now I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I miss seasons, knowing your next-door neighbors, being able to make it across town in 10 minutes, meeting an on-coming car and waving every time. But, I don't miss the 50 below windchill winter days, driving 50 miles and not seeing a single car, having to constantly be on the lookout for deer and antelope running across the highway, and driving two hours to the nearest mall :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. i live in a small town in south dakota. I absolutely love it. I love that you can see the stars at night so much better than in town and you don't hear all the traffic, sirens, and horns round the clock. Someday I hope to live on an acreage but for now small town living isn't so bad :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. We are just outside Chicago, where it's country enough that when we first moved here from L.A. we loved the corn fields and the green meadows and couldn't believe how country it was.

Now it seems not country enough, still too city, still too many suburbs. I feel like I need a season in the real country, just a respite. A relief.

  45. I live in the Brazilian Amazon basin, on a hill overlooking a town, and beyond that a beautiful river, with jungle on the other side. Its so beautiful here! But the best is when we take trips on the river, sleeping in a hammock on a beautiful river, stargazing the clearest sky ever that's reflecting off the river. It has the most amazing sunsets too!

  46. We live in the heart of Washington DC, but I grew up in an ancient farm house in upstate NY. I miss rolling hills, green grass and silence. Concrete is no fun to fall on when you are playing tag, just ask my poor kids!

  47. I live in Killeen, TX [as does one of your commenters...I just started following her, yay!] and I don't like it that much...I'm originally from Virginia Beach :) I love the loudness, the beach, the shopping, the business. I love seeing people from my high school everywhere I go. I love the warm summers and cold winters. I love the big houses and the appreciation for landscaping!!!

  48. I live in a smallish town in Northern California. It once was alot smaller that is until the city folks moved in. I love that you can wear jeans and flip flops all fall. I love that I'm less than two hours from the coast and mountains. I love that I know most people in this town. Either I went to school with them or my family did. I love that you can smell the change of seasons in the air. I love that people help one another during crisis. I love that you can see all the stars in the sky but also the lights of the city from most bluffs. I love that we have an old court house and even older church right across the street from each other. I love that we have huge events for every holiday that focuses on the family and small town charm.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I came over from blogfrog. Your photos are unbelievable!

I live in a smallish suburb and I love the small town feel but the availability to the big world in just a few minutes.

I am going to stick around! Your kids are total eye candy!

  52. We live in a city with a "amall town" appeal! In fact, we just had our 2nd annual street fair....where they close the street downtown for a fair. Unfortunately our city with the "small town" appeal is still a city when it comes to many things though....and that makes me covet the country!

  54. We live in the country and I wouldn't have it any other way. We live in a small community in Kentucky dotted with Amish houses where you get stuck behind buggies but can't get upset because it makes you stop and appreciate simplicity. I loved all the descriptions you gave and have enjoyed most of those same simple pleasures all my life. When we were expecting our first child we quickly made the move further out into the country so our children could grow up loving the outdoors and learning responsibility that comes with living in the country.

  57. I live in a suburb of St Paul and I think we have the best of both worlds. We have trails and big trees and lakes and crops and country not far from us, yet only 15 minutes in the opposite direction, we have tall buildings and taxis and heavy traffic and lots of noise. I like the peace and quiet of what you mentioned but I would miss the gym 1 mile away, local shopping that is so convenient and my Trader Joes. *smile
